How to Convert an M3U File to MP3 Format

By Jackson Lewis

An M3U file is also known as a Winamp playlist file that is also used by other MP3 players. A common misconception is that an M3U file is a music file, which it is not. M3U files contain uniform resource locators (URLs) for MP3 files saved as text files. In order to obtain the music from an M3U file, one has to visit the reference site for the actual music files contained in the playlist entries. When a company advertises that it can convert M3U files to MP3s, they have simply automated a manual process that an average computer user can accomplish on his own without additional software.

Things You'll Need

  • Text editor

Step 1

Open the M3U file in a text editor.

Step 2

Copy and paste the URLs for desired MP3 files to another document.

Step 3

Download or listen to the MP3 files referenced in the M3U file as allowed by copyright.

Step 4

Load the M3U file directly to listen to the music referenced in the file if you use WinAmp or an otherwise compatible M3U playlist player.
