How to Convert an MP3 to MID For Free

By John London

MP3 files are among the most popular audio formats used these days. They offer high quality with relatively small file sizes. However, MIDI files are smaller still, typically taking up to 10 kilobytes of storage. Accordingly, you might want to convert MP3 files to MIDI format. Fortunately, this can be done for free with very little effort.

Step 1

Follow the link in the Resources section of this article. It will take you to the official website of the Audacity sound editor. Audacity is a free open-source audio editor that works with all popular operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.

Step 2

Download and install Audacity version 1.3.6 or higher if you are using Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP or Vista. This is the version in which the MIDI export function was added.

Step 3

Start Audacity. Select "File," then navigate to "Open." Select the MP3 file which you would like to convert.

Step 4

Click "File" and select "Export." After the "Edit Metadata" dialog box opens, click "OK."

Step 5

Select "Other uncompressed files" in the "Format" field. Then choose the MIDI format. Click "OK." The conversion process will begin. You'll see a progress bar showing the progress of the conversion in real time. After the conversion is complete, the newly created MIDI file will appear in the Audacity folder.
