How to Convert Mobi to Kindle

By Michael Butler

If you previously used Mobi Reader and have purchased an Amazon Kindle, you might have many books in the .MOBI format that you want to convert to your Kindle. Although some people might try to sell you a conversion program, you do not need to convert .MOBI files to read them on the Kindle. Amazon now owns Mobi and the Kindle uses a file format derived from .MOBI. Books in .MOBI format will look the same on the Kindle as books downloaded from Amazon, so you just need to get your .MOBI books on your Kindle.

Step 1

Press the "Menu" button on your Kindle then press "Next Page." Under "Device Email," you will see the specific email address for your Kindle. You need the username, which is the part of the address before the "@" symbol.

Step 2

Open your email client or service and create a new message.

Step 3

Type "" replace "" with the actual username from Step 1.

Step 4

Attach a .MOBI file to the email message and send the message. Amazon will send the .MOBI file to your Kindle for free.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also connect your Kindle to a computer through USB. Drag and drop a .MOBI file into the Kindle's "Documents" folder to put it on the Kindle.
