How to Convert MOV to MPEG

By Mitchell White

A file that ends with ".mov" is a video file. Specifically, its a file extension owned by Apple. These MOV files are used by Apple Quicktime player, which is a specific video player for Apple. So, if you have a video on an IPOD type device that ends in ".mov", or if you have such a file on your computer, it may not be compatible with other types of players, especially simpler ones. In order to use a MOV file in a player that needs a more compatible format such as MPEG, you must do a conversion.

Step 1

Download a free converter program. There are a few of these floating around the Web, but Format Factory is a good one (See Resources).

Step 2

Go through the installation process by double-clicking on the install file that will be located on your desktop after the download is complete. You will choose an installation directory for the program during this process.

Step 3

You can start the program by going to "Start Menu", clicking on "All Programs" at the bottom, and then clicking on "Format Factory" among the drop down menu. Another menu will appear to the side, and click on the "Format Factory" option there.

Step 4

Click on the "video" tab in the Format Factory main screen. Click on the "All to MPG" button. This will bring up a new window. Click on the "Add File" button, and find your MOV file. Double click on it. then click "Ok" in the new window box to add the process back in the main screen.

Step 5

Click the "Start" button at the top of the screen to begin converting your MOV file to a MPEG.

Tips & Warnings

  • The new file will be in the "Output Folder" which has a button to access it of the same name in the main screen.
