How to Convert MP4 to MP3 With Windows

The MP4 (or MPEG-4) multimedia file format has the capability to embed video, audio and 3D graphics in a single file to be played on the Internet or through portable media devices. Although MP4 has significantly more capability than MP2 or MP3 formats, many audio players still require that audio files be in the MP3 format in order to be played on the devices. As a result, a common task that arises for Windows users is converting audio files from MP4 to MP3 format. Several freeware options are available to help you make the conversion.

Using Switch Sound Converter

Step 1

Download and install the Switch Sound Converter application (see Resources).

Step 2

Open the Switch Sound Converter application by double-clicking the program icon located on the computer's desktop.

Step 3

Choose the "Add Files" menu option and select the MP4 formatted song on your computer that you desire to convert.

Step 4

Choose the "Open" menu button to continue loading the MP4 song in the program. Click "MP3" in the song conversion output window followed by the "Encoder Options" menu option.

Step 5

Choose the "Stereo" menu option and choose the "OK" menu button to save the configuration changes.

Step 6

Choose the destination folder for the MP3 file to be saved on your computer, followed by the "Convert" menu button.

Using iTunes

Step 1

Open the iTunes program by double-clicking the program icon on your computer.

Step 2

Click the "Edit" menu option followed by the "Preferences" menu item. Choose the "Import Settings" menu selection located on the "General" menu tab.

Step 3

Choose the "MP3 Encoder" located under the "Import Using" menu option followed by the "OK" menu button.

Step 4

Choose the song to convert by single-left-clicking the song followed by selecting "Create MP3 Version," which will make the conversion.

Using Media Convert

Step 1

Download and install the Media Convert file utility (see Resources).

Step 2

Select the "Browse" menu option and choose the song to convert to MP3 format. Choose the "Input Format" followed by "Sound" and "MPEG-4" to select the MP4 source file format.

Step 3

Choose the output format for the conversion by selecting the "MPEG=1/2Audio Layer-3(MP3)" for the output format in the program utility followed by the "OK" menu button.

Step 4

Select the "Save As" menu button by right-clicking the file conversion link displayed on the program, and the MP3 file will be saved to your computer.
