How to Convert WAV to MP3 Files

By Gabriele Sturmer

WAV files are high-quality audio files that are uncompressed and usually have a large file size. If you need to use your file on a device or in a program that doesn't support the WAV format or you desire a smaller file size, you can use an audio conversion program to convert the WAV to the compressed MP3 format. You can also specify a quality level so you can balance your need for quality audio with a suitable file size.

ConverterLite

Step 1

Download and install ConverterLite from its website. This program can convert several audio and video formats, including WAV.

Step 2

Launch ConverterLite. Locate your WAV file on your hard drive and drag it to the program's right pane.

Step 3

Click "Next" and click the "MP3" button in the Formats group. Select a quality level from the tiles shown, which range from excellent to average.

Step 4

Click "Next" and "Convert" to create the MP3.

Free MP3 WMA Converter

Step 1

Download and install the Free MP3 WMA Converter from the Koyote Software website. This audio conversion tool supports the WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG and FLAC formats.

Step 2

Open Free MP3 WMA Converter and click the "Add Files" button. Select the WAV file and click "Open." MP3 is selected as the output format by default.

Step 3

Click the gray button to the right of the Format Parameters setting in the right pane if you want to fine-tune the quality settings. Drag the "Current Bitrate" slider to the right to increase quality or to the left to decrease it. Alternatively, click the "Preset" tab and select a quality level based on a preset, such as phone, voice, radio, tape, CD or studio. Click "Apply" and "OK" when finished.

Step 4

Click "Convert!" to start the conversion process.

Shuangs WAV to MP3 Converter

Step 4

Click "Convert" to start the conversion and then click "OK" after it completes.

Tips & Warnings

  • All of these programs place the converted file in your WAV's directory.
  • Advanced users can take advantage of each program's customized audio quality settings. These options are available by clicking the "Settings" button on ConvertLite's "MP3 Quality" step, the "Options" button within Shuangs WAV to MP3 Converter and the gray button beside the Format Parameter setting within Free MP3 WMA Converter.
  • Using a higher bitrate increases the MP3's file size.
