How to Convert Winrar to Zip

By Stephen Lilley

Files with a .RAR extension are a type of computer archive file that are opened using a program called WinRAR. A computer has to have WinRAR installed on it in order for these files to work properly. A much more widely used type of computer archive file is the .ZIP file, as the capabilities to open and use .ZIP files is built into the Windows operating system. If you want to convert a WinRAR .RAR archive to a .ZIP archive, you just need to extract it and then create a new archive.

Step 1

Make sure WinRAR is installed on your computer. If it is not, you can download and install a fully functional trial version via the official WinRAR website (see References).

Step 2

Right click on the WinRAR archive you'd like to convert.

Step 3

Click the "Extract Here..." option. This will extract the contents of the WinRAR archive to a new folder in the same computer directory you're working in.

Step 4

Right click on the new folder that was just extracted from the WinRAR archive.

Step 5

Click "Send To" and then "Compressed (Zipped) Folder." This will take the contents of the directory and use them to create a new .ZIP computer archive. The contents of your WinRAR archive will now be available as a new .ZIP archive.
