How to Convert YouTube Video to Music

By Chad Buleen

Instead of having to go online and find a music video on YouTube each time a music lover wants to listen to a song, she instead has the option to convert the audio/video files from the YouTube videos into music files. YouTube videos are uploaded as FLV files. These files can easily be converted to MP3 music files. One of the reasons someone might want to convert YouTube videos to music files is that there may be a YouTube video of a band's live performance that cannot be found elsewhere. If the video is converted to music, a listener can download it and listen to it any time she wants.

Step 1

Visit YouTube and type the name of the song you want to search for in the "Search" box. Click on a result to find a file. Once you find the right song, click inside the Web browser and select "Ctrl+C" to copy the Web address of the video.

Step 2

Enter "" into the address bar. Wait a moment for the page to load. After the page has loaded, select the button that is located near the words "By URL."

Step 3

Paste the Web address that was copied in Step 1 into the text box on the page by selecting "Ctrl+V" or right-clicking and selecting the "Paste" option from the list that comes up on the screen. Click on the button next to "I Accept the Terms" at the bottom of the page.

Step 4

Have patience as the download begins. Notice the status bar near the upper part of the page that shows the status of the FLV file that is being downloaded. After a few moments, a message will appear by the status bar that says "Status Complete." Select the button on the bottom of the window that says "Convert."

Step 5

Wait until a new window appears that asks what to do with the downloaded file. Select the "Open File" choice in the box. The file will now open as an MP3 file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save the MP3 file to your desktop and then drag it to iTunes to include it in a playlist.
  • The longer the video is, the more time it will take to convert it to a music file.
