How to Copy a DVD to iTunes

So you've upgraded to an iPod and although iTunes offers an impressive selection of movies and TV shows, you just can't seem to find that one video you want. Sure, you've got the DVD, but since you have an iPod, you might want to watch it on the little screen. Well, before you pop in that old DVD, take a few moments to follow these steps and you'll soon have the power to transfer that old DVD, along with any others, right onto your iPod.

Step

Download Magic DVD Ripper at the website (see Resources). Select the "Free Download" link to install the program onto your computer; this gives you 30 days to try out the program. When prompted, choose to "Save File."

Step

Run the file and follow the instructions for setup. Read and accept the License Agreement and select where you would like the program to be installed.

Step

Locate the folder in which the Magic DVD Ripper was installed on your computer. Unless you indicate otherwise, it will most likely appear on your desktop. Select a location for the shortcut to Magic DVD Ripper on the next screen. Click "Next" to continue.

Step

Determine if you want the program to appear on your desktop. If you do, then leave the box checked. If not, uncheck the box. Select "Next" to continue.

Step

Confirm the settings are correct. Once verified, select "Install." Once installed, click on the "Finish" button to launch the program.

Step

Insert a DVD into the computer's disc drive. Wait for the program to recognize the video (it will show up in the "Source" menu). Once the DVD is recognized, select the "Convert" tab.

Step

Locate the "Output" menu. From here, select "iPod" from the "Profile" drop down menu.

Step

Select a destination to temporarily store the converted file. Once the conversion process is complete, you will transfer it to your iTunes library.

Step

Click the "Start" button to begin the conversion. It will typically take about 30 minutes to convert a 120-minute DVD into iPod (MP4) format. Once complete, you will receive a message notifying you that the DVD was successfully ripped.

Step

Locate the file. It will be in the folder you selected earlier. Keep this screen open and open your iTunes library. Drag the file into your iTunes library. iTunes will recognize the file as a video and transfer it to your "Movies" folder. Once the file is copied into iTunes (which usually takes less than a minute), simply hook up your iPod and sync the movies.
