How to Copy a Voice Memo From an iPhone

An iTunes sync will copy a voice memo from your iPhone to your computer. When successfully executed, the voice memo copy will reside securely in your iTunes music library even after you’ve deleted the original from your iPhone. Ordinarily, you simply need to instruct iTunes to “Include Voice Memos” before hitting “Sync.” However, iTunes 10 occasionally throws a glitchy fit that requires troubleshooting, particularly for voice memos. Thankfully, the two most popular workarounds are as straightforward as the sync itself.

Synchronize

Step

Open iTunes on your computer. Then connect your iPhone to your computer.

Step

Click on your iPhone’s name when it appears under “Devices” in the left sidebar. Next, click on the “Music” tab above the main pane on the right.

Step

Click to activate the “Sync Music” check box. Then choose to sync your “Entire Music Library” or “Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres.” Either way, check the “Include voice memos” check box.

Step

Click “Apply” on the lower-right corner of your screen. Your iPhone voice memo will copy over to the iTunes library on your computer. You will find it in the left sidebar within “Music,” under “Library” and within “Voice Memos,” under “Playlists.”

Troubleshoot Sync, Method 1

Step

Click the “Eject” icon to the right of your iPhone’s name under “Devices” in the left sidebar. Then unplug your iPhone from the computer.

Step

Click on “File” on the upper-left corner, followed by “Library” and then “Organize Library.”

Step

Check “Consolidate Files” and then click “OK.”

Step

Plug your iPhone back into your computer.

Go to “File” once again on the upper left and then click on “Sync (Your iPhone).”

Step

Allow the syncing process to complete. You should find your voice memo copied over to “Music,” under “Library” and “Voice Memos,” under “Playlists,” in the left sidebar.

Troubleshoot Sync, Method 2

Step

Tap “Voice Memo” on your iPhone’s home screen.

Step

Tap the three-bar “index’ icon on the lower right. You will then see a list of all the voice memos currently on your iPhone.

Step

Tap the directional arrow to the far right of the voice memo you would like to copy over to your computer.

Step

Tap the “Trim Memo” button on the voice memo editing screen. You do not actually have to trim your voice memo.

Step

Press the “Home” button to exit “Voice Memos” and return to your home screen.

Step

Return to iTunes on your computer. Click “File” on the upper-left corner, followed by “Sync (Your iPhone).”

Step

Allow the syncing process to complete. You should find your voice memo copied over to “Music,” under “Library” and “Voice Memos,” under “Playlists,” in the left sidebar.
