How to Copy DVDs to a Hard Drive for Free

By Brendan O'Brien

If you are tired of constantly searching and sorting your DVD collection, consider burning your movies directly onto your hard drive. Use one of the various free software applications available on the web to transfer DVDs to your computer. Be forewarned, however, that movies take up a lot of space on your hard drive.

Step 1

Close all of you applications and restart your computer. This will free up needed resources on your hard drive.

Step 2

Open a browser and go to DVD Decrypter, Burn4Free or the Nero 9 Lite website.

Step 3

Download and install the software.

Step 4

Insert your DVD and launch your DVD burning application.

Step 5

Find the DVD drive through the DVD burning application. The application will ask you for a location where you want the copy of the DVD to reside. Select a location on your hard drive.

Step 6

Hit the "Burn" or "Start" button in the software application.

Step 7

Wait for the DVD to burn onto your hard drive. This may take a hour or two.
