How to Copy Music From iPod to iTunes

Music is typically copied from an iPod to iTunes by connecting the iPod to your computer and syncing it with the iTunes software. However, if you install the iTunes software on a new computer and then connect your iPod, the Auto Sync will erase all the music on your iPod. To copy the music form your iPod to iTunes, you will need to first prevent iTunes from syncing with your iPod.

Step 1

Connect the iPod to your computer with the USB connector cable. Plug the wide flat end into your iPod and the USB end into a USB port on the computer. Click "No" if a dialog box appears, asking if you want to sync your iPod with iTunes.

Step 2

Open "My Computer" from the icon on your desktop. Your iPod should appear under "Drives with Removable Storage" with its own drive letter. Double click the drive letter for your iPod.

Step 3

Show hidden files and folders for the window. On Windows XP, select Tools > Folder Options > View. Put a check in the box for "Show Hidden Files and Folders." In Windows Vista, click the "Organize" button and then select "Folder and Search Options" from the context menu. Click on the "View" tab when the Folder Options window appears. Put a check in the box for "Show Hidden Files and Folders." Click "OK." You should now see a folder labeled "iPod_Control."

Step 4

Copy the "iPod_Control" folder to a location on your computer, such as the desktop. Right click the folder and select "Copy" from the context menu. Right click on your desktop to display the Context menu. Select "Paste."

Step 5

Remove the hidden attribute from the folder. Right click the folder and select "Properties" from the Context menu. Remove the check for "Hidden" that is next to Attributes. Click "OK." When the Confirm Attribute Changes window appears, select "Apply Changes to this Folder, Subfolders and Files" before clicking "OK."

Step 6

Double click on the "iTunes" icon on your desktop to open the program, if it is not already open. Select "Music" under Library at the left to display your Music Library. Click "File" and select "Add Folder to Library."

Step 7

Select your desktop from the Browse for Folder window and click the plus sign next to the iPod_Control folder. This will expand the contents of the folder. Click the "+" sign next to the Music folder to expand its contents. There are folders in here that contain your music to copy into iTunes. The folders are named "F00," "F01," "F02" and so on.

Step 8

Select the folder named "F00" and click "OK." This will add all the music in the folder to your iTunes Music Library.

Step 9

Repeat for the remaining folders within the Music folder to copy all of your music into iTunes.

Tips & Warnings

  • When your music is copied to iTunes they will automatically be organized by the ID3 tags embedded in the music files.
  • If you open iTunes with your iPod connected to the computer, the automatic syncing process will erase all your music files.
  • If the hidden attribute is not removed from the iPod_Control folder and all subfolders, iTunes will not display the contents of the folder.
