How to Copy Yahoo Email Contacts to Gmail

When you set up a new email address with a different provider you will want to transfer all your email contacts. Rather than type each existing contact into your new address book, you can copy them by exporting your contacts from one email provider to the new provider. To copy your Yahoo! email contacts, export your contacts from Yahoo! and import them into Gmail.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Excel

Export from All-New Yahoo! Mail

Step 1

Sign into your Yahoo! email account.

Step 2

Go to "Options" and select "More Options."

Step 3

Click "Contacts Options."

Step 4

Select "Export" from the "Tools" menu.

Step 5

Click "Export Now" next to "Yahoo! CSV" which is the type of program to which you want to export your contacts.

Step 6

Verify the drop down menu next to "Open With" in the pop-up box says "Microsoft Office Excel" and click "OK." Your contacts will open in Excel as a CSV (comma separated value) file.

Step 7

Go to the Microsoft Office icon at the top, left corner of your Excel window and choose "Save As."

Step 8

Choose where you want to save the file, type in a name and then click "Save."

Export from Beta Mail and Yahoo! Mail Classic

Step 1

Sign into your Yahoo! account.

Step 2

Click the "Contacts" tab.

Step 3

Click the drop down arrow next to "Actions" and choose "Export."

Step 4

Click "Export Now" next to "Yahoo! CSV."

Step 5

Click "OK" when prompted to open the file in Excel and save the file after it opens in Excel.

Import to Gmail

Step 1

Sign into your Gmail account.

Step 2

Click "Contacts" which is located above the "Compose Mail" button.

Step 3

Click the drop down arrow next to "More Options" and choose "Import."

Step 4

Select "Choose File."

Step 5

Navigate to the location where you saved the CSV file, highlight the file and click "Import." Gmail will show you the number of contacts imported once the import is finished.
