How to Create a Photo Set on Flickr

By Jen Raskin

Flickr is a popular web-based photo- and video-sharing site that also functions as an online community. Offering free photo-storage accounts to users, Flickr is a great place to post and share the digital photos you have stored on your computer. A popular Flickr feature is photo sets, an organizational tool that allows you to create a virtual photo album for an event or topic.

Create a Photo Set With New Photos

Step 1

Log in to your Flickr account. If you do not have a Flickr account, it is simple to create one--the website's front page will guide you through the process. Flickr is owned and run by Yahoo, and your Flickr account is tied to your Yahoo ID.

Step 2

Choose your method of uploading photos. Flickr has a variety of uploading tools, from their basic "Uploader" for PC or Mac, to iPhoto or Windows plug-ins to email or mobile-phone uploading tools.

Step 3

Once you've chosen your upload method, follow the dialog-box directions to upload your photos. Depending on the uploading tool you use, you may be asked during the upload if you would like to "Create a Set." Click "yes" and you will be prompted to name your set--for example, "Hawaii June 2008" or "Billy's 7th Birthday Party."

Step 4

If your uploading method does not allow you to create a photo set, you will create the photo set after the pictures are uploaded.

Step 5

Once your photos have been successfully uploaded, go to the Flickr front page. At the top of the page, click on the "Organize" button. You will be brought to the "Organizr," a place for you to create, organize and keep track of all of your photos. The "Organizr" screen has buttons on top, photos on the bottom, and a big, blank gray section covering most of the screen.

Step 6

At the top left of the gray box, locate the organizing buttons: Batch organize, Sets & Collections, Groups and Maps. Click on Sets & Collections. Now you will see a choice to create a new set or a new collection. Click on "Create a new set."

Step 7

At the bottom of the screen you should see your "photostream," thumbnails of all the photos that you have uploaded to Flickr. Click and drag your selected photos into the middle, empty, gray portion of your screen. Select only the photos you'd like included in your new set. If you would like to rearrange the order of the photos, you may do so by simply dragging them around inside the set box.

Step 8

To the left of the screen you will see two pink text boxes. In the top text box, you will type the name of your set (Hawaii June 2008). In the larger box, you have the option to write a more detailed description of the photo set.

Step 9

Finally, look through the photos and choose your favorite. This photo will be the "album cover" for the set. Click and drag this photo into the top left corner and drop it into the empty picture frame.

Step 10

When you are satisfied with the arrangement of your photos and the description of your set, click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you've saved photos to a set, you can always go back and edit them. You can resize them, crop them, adjust the lighting and so on, all right from the Flickr website.
  • It is also a good idea to add captions and descriptions to your photos.
  • With a basic, free Flickr account you can upload up to 100MB of photos a month and create three free photo sets. If you upgrade to a Pro account, you can upload an unlimited amount of photos and create an unlimited number of photo sets.
