How to Create a Playlist for an iPod Shuffle
The iPod Shuffle by Apple is one of the lightest, most-versatile MP3 players around today. Available with either a 1GB or 2GB storage capacity, they can hold enough music to get you through your work day, a workout, or even a long trip. Here's how to create your own Playlist and upload it to your iPod Shuffle.
Things You'll Need
- iPod Shuffle, Charged
- iPod/Computer connection cord
- iTunes Program (Version 7.4 or later for Mac or Version 8.0 or later for PC)
After you have received your new iPod and fully charged it, or even if you just want to change up a Playlist on an existing iPod, open the iTunes program on your computer. If you don't have iTunes, see the Resources section at the end of this article.
Now you need to sort through and find your favorite songs, right? Even if you have thousands of songs in your iTunes program, like I do, it's easy to sort through and pick your favorites.FYI: In a 1GB iPod Shuffle, you can store about 240 songs (in 128-Kbps AAC format). A 2GB iPod Shuffle can hold about 500 songs.
With your iTunes program open, click on Music, listed under Library, on the left side of the screen. This will bring up your ENTIRE music library stored on iTunes. You can then sort this massive list so it displays Artist, Albums, Genre, etc., alphabetically. I find it most helpful to sort by Artist because it sub-sorts each Artist into a list of their albums, alphabetically. To sort this way, click the Artist tab at the top of your Music Library list.
I find it helpful to not rate any of my songs for personal use. I have my songs in iTunes in the first place because I already like them, so why rate them? I reserve the Ratings feature to create special Playlists, like for my iPod Shuffle. Go through and mark the songs you want for your iPod Shuffle with a particular rating designation (i.e. 1 to 5 Stars). Make sure you use the same number for all the songs you want on your Playlist.
After you've finished rating all the songs, you need to make them easy to turn into a Playlist. The same way you sorted your Music Library by Artist, you can also sort by Rating. Just click the "Rating" button at the top of your library and you will now see all the songs you just rated appear at the top of your list. Now, holding down the CTRL button on your keyboard with one finger, use your mouse to highlight each song that you have rated. Don't let go of the CTRL button until you're completely finished highlighting all the songs or you'll have to start over! Once you're finished highlighting, you can safely release the CTRL button. Next, go to File in the upper-left corner of iTunes and choose "New Playlist from Selection." Name your new Playlist "iPod Shuffle Playlist" or something similar.
You're almost done! Connect your iPod Shuffle to your computer and follow the registration procedures. A window will pop up after the registration that prompts you to sync your iPod Shuffle (i.e. put songs on it). Near the bottom of that page you will see a bar that asks "Sync from Playlist" or something similar. Click on this bar and choose the Playlist you created, "iPod Shuffle Playlist" or whatever you named it. Also, you can designate your iPod Shuffle to upload the songs in the order you have them in your Playlist. This is helpful because the newer iPod Shuffles have the option to "unshuffle" and play songs in the order they are on the Playlist (which is great if you're uploading an audio book!). After you're done, click OK, or Sync, and Viola! Start enjoying the music!
