How to Create an Eszet Using Computer Keyboard

By Carl Raimer

The Eszett, or ß, is a German character that represents an "ss" or "sharp s" sound in the German language. It is generally accepted that ß is a ligature that combines the letters f and z together. Today, the letter is still used in German spoken in Germany and Austria, among other places, but German-speaking countries such as Switzerland and Liechtenstein have reformed the language to abolish ß with the letters "ss." Since ß is still used in Germany, it is useful to know how to type the letter quickly using both Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Windows

Step 1

Press down the "alt" key.

Step 2

Press in the numbers "225" or "0223" on the keypad with the alt key held.

Step 3

Release the "alt" key and the letter ß should appear.

Mac OS X

Step 1

Press down the "option" key.

Step 2

Press the letter "s."

Step 3

Release the "option" key and continue typing, with the ß letter appearing where the cursor was.
