How to Cut MP4 Files
MP4 video files are compatible with most portable media players, making them a great way to take your favorite videos with you when you're traveling. However, they can be very large, taking up a lot of storage space on your device. If there's only a portion of the video you want to watch, you can use Windows' own movie maker program to trim the video, and then one of any number of converter programs to convert the trimmed file back to MP4.
Trimming the Video
Launch Windows Live Movie Maker. This free program comes with most versions of Windows.
Click on "Add Videos and Photos." Select the MP4 file you want to cut and click "Open."
Click on the "Edit" tab. There's a slider underneath the video window. Two bars will appear on the slider underneath the video window. Drag the bars to where you want the video to begin and end.
Click "Save Trim."
Click on the blue button in the top-left corner. Go to "Save Movie," choose your video quality and click "Save." The cut MP4 will be saved as an WMV. You will now need to convert it back to MP4 using any of the methods described in sections 2 through 4.
Converting the File with Media-Convert
Go to the Media-Convert website (see Resources).
Click on "Choose File." Select the WMV file you just created and click "Open."
Click on the second drop-down list next to "Output Format" and select "MPEG-4 (.mp4)" and then click "OK." Media-Convert will convert the file remotely and give you a download link after the process is complete.
