How to Decorate Around a Flat-Screen TV
Flat-screen televisions can be difficult to decorate around, since they are usually quite large and the focal point of the room. Small knickknacks scattered around a flat-screen TV can look silly and overwhelmed, and art hung around a flat-screen TV can distract from the TV itself. There are some things you can do, however, that will make the TV wall more interesting and decorative.
Things You'll Need
- Painter's tape
- Tarps or other protective covering for nearby items
- Black floating shelves
- Bamboo or other decorative items with strong shapes
Paint the wall behind your TV. Choose an accent color, which means a color that is not on any other wall in the room. This will highlight your TV and make it stand out. You could even paint the wall in an unusual design, such as horizontal stripes.
Add shelves. Adding sleek black or silver floating shelves on both sides of your television (and below it) will extend the look of your television.
Place interesting items on the shelves. Add color with a large bamboo plant or some interesting sculptures or vases. Personal photos also work well, but keep them black-and-white so their colors do not compete with what is on the television screen.
Add architectural features. Consider adding wainscoting halfway up the wall, stopping it directly below the television. Top the wainscoting with a chair rail and paint the wall above the rail.
Frame the television by using pre-cut molding purchased from any home center. Paint the inside of the frame, then mount the television so that it sits in the center of the frame.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not put mirrors around your TV, because mirrors reflect light, which may create a glare that makes it difficult to watch the TV.
