How to Delete Applications on an iPhone

By Charlie Higgins

Maybe you want to remove a lousy third-party application installed using Installer or Cydia, or maybe you've realized that an application you purchased from the Apple Store is no longer necessary. You can delete an application easily even if you are a brand new user of the iPhone. Doing so will free up memory on your iPhone's disk so you can add other files and programs.

Step 1

Decide what application you want to delete. Find the application icon on your iPhone's home screen.

Step 2

Click on the application and hold it for a few seconds until the icon begins to shake or wiggle. This is the same action you always take to move or rearrange icons on the home screen.

Step 3

Click the "X" that appears in the upper left-hand corner of the icon. Select "Delete" when asked to proceed.

Step 4

Remove the application from iTunes so that it won't be re-added to your iPhone the next time you perform a sync. You can also configure iTunes not to add all your applications to the iPhone when syncing. Access the "Applications" tab in your iPhone and change the syncing options to "Manual."

  • The iPhone does not let you delete applications that are pre-installed by Apple.
