How to Delete iPhone Memory

By Aaron Wein

The Apple iPhone can store up to 32 GB of multimedia, applications and more, depending on the model. There may come a time when you want to delete your iPhone's memory, such as if you plan to sell it or if you want to alleviate technical errors. The iPhone does not have built-in tools to clear device data on its own. Instead, you must use iTunes to set up the memory deletion.

Things You'll Need

  • iTunes
  • iPhone USB cable

Step 1

Load iTunes and connect the iPhone to your computer using the iPhone's USB cable.

Step 2

Select your iPhone from the iTunes "Source" list on the left. Basic iTunes functions appear in the main panel.

Step 3

Click "Restore." A dialog box pops up asking you to back up the iPhone or skip the action.

Step 4

Choose "Back up" if you want to save all of the data on your iPhone to iTunes before deleting the iPhone's memory or choose "Don't back up" to skip the action.

Step 5

Click "Restore." iTunes deletes your iPhone's memory.
