How to Disable Avast for My Mail

By Pamela Gardapee

Avast offers free and fee-based antivirus software with security shields that protect your computer from malware and harmful viruses. Avast has a security shield for Internet surfing, email, P2P, instant messengers and networks. You may disable any shield from the Avast user interface, but when you open any email to read it, you won't have any antivirus protection to protect you if the email contains a harmful malware or virus.

Step 1

Open the Avast user interface by right-clicking on the Avast icon in the task bar. Click "Open avast! user interface."

Step 2

Click "Real-Time Shields" in the menu on the left side of the screen.

Step 3

Click "Mail Shield" from the drop-down menu.

Step 4

Click "Stop" to open the drop-down menu. Click on "Stop for 10 minutes," "Stop for one hour," "Stop until restart of computer" or "Stop permanently." A pop-up message will ask you if you really want to make this change. Click "OK" to disable the email shield.

Step 5

Close the Avast user interface and your email will not be scanned for viruses or malware by Avast.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disabling your antivirus protection leaves your computer open to potential threats, including emails from friends who may have a virus without knowing about it.
