How to Disable SMS Notifications on a Droid

By Jean Sommer

The standard text messaging application on most Droid phones will cause a notification to appear at the top of your phone when you receive an SMS (Short Message Service) or MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) message. Many third-party messaging applications are available through the Android market that will also send a notification, causing double notices for every SMS message. Turning off SMS notifications on the Droid text messaging application will prevent any double SMS reports.

Step 1

Go to the "Messaging" application. The Messaging window will have all the different messaging applications you have set up on your phone.

Step 2

Press the "Menu" button. Choose "Messaging Settings" from the menu choices. The Messaging Settings has all the applications' settings listed.

Step 3

Touch the "Text Messaging" application, which will open the settings for the text messaging application only.

Step 4

Touch the check box next to "Notifications" under the Text Messaging Settings heading to deselect it. The box should not show a check mark to it. This will only disable the notifications you receive from the standard application for text messaging.

Tips & Warnings

  • To turn notification back on, follow the same procedure, but make sure there is a green check mark next to the Notifications in Text Messaging Settings.
