How to Disable the Windows XP Login Screen at Startup

It is a excellent idea to keep the information on your computer secure at all times. If your computer is in a safe location, and you are the only user, it may be more appropriate to omit the logon process. There are other options available to disable your logon screen other than changing your registry keys. Turn on the automatic logon in Microsoft Windows XP on a computer that is not joined to a domain or connected to a server.

Step 1

Click "Start", type "Run" and press "Enter."

Step 2

Type "control userpasswords2" in the "Open" box and select "OK."

Step 3

Uncheck the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and select "Apply."

Step 4

Type the password in the "Password" box in the "Automatically Log On" window, and retype the password in the "Confirm Password" box.

Step 5

Select "OK" to close the "Automatically Log On" window, and then click "OK" to close the "User Accounts" window. Restart the computer; it will take you directly to your desktop without having to logon.

  • With your logon screen disabled, anyone is able to gain access to your computer.
