How to Display Ink Levels

By Steve Smith

It is important to know how much ink remains in your printer cartridges, particularly if you are starting a big print job. Running out of ink in the middle of the task can waste time and paper, as some pages will blur or print with only parts of the text visible. Checking your ink levels can help you avoid this. Some printers use software that alerts you when ink is running low, but a more fool-proof method is to check the levels manually through your PC.

Step 1

Click on "Start" in the system tray. Then select the "Control Panel" option in the "Start" menu.

Step 2

Select the "Printers and Other Hardware" option and then ,in the subsequent dialogue box, choose "Printers and Faxes." Select the printer for which you want to check ink levels in the resulting dialogue box.

Step 3

Select the printer's preferences dialogue box by choosing "Printer" in the upper left and then "Preferences" in the drop-down menu that appears. Navigate to the maintenance tab in the dialogue box and select it.

Step 4

Choose the ink status monitor option in the maintenance tab of the dialogue box. This option will display how much ink is remaining in the cartridges.
