How to Download a Free Antivirus in Your Laptop
Viruses are out there, hidden in that webpage, lurking on your best friend's thumb drive. Some have been discovered on new drives fresh from the factory. Without an antivirus program, your laptop is as vulnerable. Several antivirus companies have released versions of their software free for personal use.
Things You'll Need
- Internet connection
- Internet Explorer
Navigate to http://www.avast.com/.
Click the yellow download button on the left for Avast! Home Edition Free Antivirus. You will be taken to another page. Click "Download Now."
Near the top of your Internet Explorer window, a bar will appear notifying you that it has blocked the website from downloading files to your laptop. Right-click on this bar and select "Download File." A security warning will appear asking you what to do with the file. Select "Run." Click "Run" again on the next window.
Select your preferred language and click "Next." Avast will download any necessary packages to your laptop. Click on "Next" when the setup screen appears. The readme file will appear. Click "Next."
A license agreement will appear. Choose the "I agree" radio button and click "Next" after you read the terms. Click "Next" on the Destination screen. Allow Avast to use the Typical configuration by clicking "Next" on the Configuration screen.
A summary will appear, titled "Installation Information." This is your final chance to change any settings before proceeding with the installation. Click "Next."
As Avast installs you will see a progress bar. When it is complete, a window will appear asking you if you wish Avast to perform a full scan of your hard drive the next time your laptop reboots. If this is not a new installation of Windows choose "Yes," otherwise select "No."
The next window to appear will ask if you wish to restart your laptop now or later. Your laptop will not be fully protected until you restart, so choose the "Restart" radio button and click "Finish." Your laptop will now reboot. If you instructed Avast to scan your laptop it will do so now.
When your laptop finishes rebooting Avast will display a window reminding you of the fact that you have not yet registered your copy of the software. Click the first link in the list to be taken to the Avast Home Registration page, then click "OK" on the window to clear the screen.
Fill out the information requested on the form, providing Avast with a valid email address. Click the yellow registration button near the bottom. Avast will then send you a registration key via email.
When your Avast registration email arrives, highlight the license key that you were given, right-click and select "Copy." Double-click the Avast icon on your Desktop to open the Registration window. Paste your key into this window and click "OK."
