How to Download a Streaming MP4 RTMP With a JW Player

By Theodora Pennypacker

JW Player is an open-source framework for streaming video over RTMP, a protocol that is specialized to transfer media on the Internet. If a JW Player is streaming video in the MP4 format, you can use a few tools to download the media. Replay Media Catcher, RealPlayer and Video DownloadHelper, a Firefox add-on can all be used for this task.

Replay Media Catcher

Step 1

Launch Replay Media Catcher. Click the “Record” button.

Step 2

Launch an Internet browser and load the Web page with the embedded JW Player and streaming MP4 video. The application will recognize the media and record the video stream. A “Completed” message will appear when the downloaded MP4 video is available.

Step 3

Go to “Tools” on the program menu and select “Open Storage Folder.” The downloaded MP4 video will be accessible from this location.

RealPlayer

Step 1

Launch RealPlayer. Open the “RealPlayer” drop-down menu on the program toolbar. Select “Preferences…” and a popup window will appear. Select the “Download & Recording” entry under the “Category” menu.

Step 2

Click the “Browse” button alongside the “Save Files to” field. A “Browse for Folder" pop-up window will appear. Select a storage location for downloaded video and click "OK."

Step 3

Check the “Enable Web Downloading & Recording” box and the plug-in will be added to the Internet browsers installed on your system.

Step 4

Launch an Internet browser and load the Web page with the embedded JW Player and streaming MP4 video. A "Download This Video" overlay will appear on the media.

Step 5

Click the "Download This Video" button. The "RealPlayer Download & Recording Manger" will pop-up and display the file download progress. A confirmation message will appear when the process is complete. The downloaded MP4 video will be saved in the pre-selected storage location.

Video DownloadHelper

Step 1

Launch Firefox and install the Video DownloadHelper add-on. (See Resource 3) Close the application to finalize the integration of the add-on.

Step 2

Re-launch Firefox and load the Web page with the embedded JW Player and streaming MP4 video. Wait for Video DownloadHelper to recognize the media. When this happens, the add-on’s icon on the Firefox navigation bar will be animated.

Step 3

Click the animated Video DownloadHelper icon and the name of the streaming video’s MP4 source file will display.

Step 4

Choose the “Download” option from the fly-out menu and follow the on-screen instructions to download the MP4 video to a preferred location.
