How to Download an NTLDR Fix Onto a Thumb Drive

By Michael Butler

If you receive the message "NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart" when trying to start Windows, you know that something has gone wrong on your computer. Windows uses the NTLDR program during the boot process to start up all the other programs Windows needs to run. You need to download an NTLDR fix so that Windows can start up, and then you can troubleshoot the underlying issue. Download the fix to a thumb drive on a working computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Working computer

Step 1

Insert the thumb drive into a USB port on a working computer. You cannot download the file from the computer that needs the fix. You must find a computer that will start.

Step 2

Open the Web browser and find the NLTDR fix designed for loading on a thumb drive. See the Resources section for a link to one.

Step 3

Click on the link to the fix. A download box will pop up. Choose to save the file to open a navigation window.

Step 4

Click on "Computer" or "My Computer" in the navigation window. This gets you to a list of all the drives on the computer. Select the USB drive and click "Save" to download directly to the thumb drive.
