How to Download Flash Shockwave Video Clips

By Alexis Lawrence

Flash Shockwave video clips, which can be recognized by their SWF file extensions, contain animation and audio in a container that is small in comparison to other standard video file formats. This makes SWF clips ideal for storing on websites. If you have found an SWF clip on the Internet that you would like to download, you cannot use most of the online download systems, such as ClipNabber or KeepVid, because they recognize only the FLV Flash video extension. A few applications, however, do provide the necessary tools to download SWFs.

SoThinkMedia’s SWF Catcher

Step 1

Download the SoThinkMedia SWF Catcher for either Internet Explorer or Firefox (see Resources). Go to the “Downloads” folder and double-click the SWF Catcher file. Follow the screens to install the SWF Catcher to the web browser.

Step 2

Launch Internet Explorer or Firefox on your computer. Go to the web page that contains the Flash Shockwave video that you want to download.

Step 3

Go to “Tools>Sothink SWF Catcher" to open the SoThink SWF Catcher in the web browser. The SWF Catcher window opens on the screen. Put a check mark by the name of the SWF video that appears in the SWF Catcher list to select the video. Choose the folder where you want to save the file on your computer’s hard drive and click “Save” to download the video to your computer.

Firefox

Step 1

Download and install the Firefox web browser from Mozilla (see Resources). Firefox has a built-in feature for downloading SWF video, and versions of Firefox are available for both Windows and Mac systems.

Step 2

Launch the Firefox web browser on your computer and go to the web page that contains the SWF video. Right-click at any spot on the page and choose “View Page Info.” When the “Page Info” box comes up, go to the “Media” tab to view the available media.

Step 3

Find the SWF file that you want to download in the media list and click on it to highlight it. Press the “Save As” button. In the “Save” window that comes up, select the folder where you would like to save the SWF file on your hard drive and click the “Save” button.

Flash Favorite

Step 1

Download Flash Favorite from Pipisoft (see Resources). Flash Favorites downloads and saves videos in both the SWF and FLV format, but only works in Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Open Internet Explorer on your computer. Go to the web page where the Flash video that you want to download is located.

Step 3

Go to the “Start” menu of your computer, click “All Programs” and click on “Flash Favorite” to open the program. Switch to the “IE Instance” tab in Flash Favorite if it is not already selected, and the Flash videos contained on the web page display in the window. Click the video that you want to download in the list.

Step 4

Click the folder icon by “Destination” to pick the folder where you would like to save the Flash Shockwave video clip. Enter a new name for the clip if you would like in the box provided. Then, click the “Save” button to download the Flash Shockwave video to your computer.
