How to Download Music to iTunes From an External Hard Drive

Step 1

Gather all of the music files you wish to transfer and put them in a central folder with a memorable name on your external hard drive. Keep this folder in your drive's "Main" directory, the one you see when you first open the drive.

Step 2

Open iTunes. If you have not downloaded the program, see the resources section for a download link.

Step 3

Go to the top menu and click on the "File" tab, then select the "Add Folder to iTunes" option. A new "Browse" window will pop up.

Step 4

Select your external hard drive from the pull-down menu in the "Browse" menu and then find the folder you created in step 1. Highlight it by clicking on it once, and then press "OK."

Step 5

As the files are added to the service, you will see the songs appear in the service. Because the songs are linked to your hard drive, they won't play unless your hard drive is plugged in.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to sync your iTunes library with an iPod, your external hard drive must be plugged in.
