How to Embed an Image in a Cell

By Kat Walcott

Adding images to your Excel spreadsheets is a great way to enhance and customize them. While Microsoft Excel does not offer a way to embed images directly into spreadsheet cells, images can be added to a cell comment, which is the box that appears when you hover the mouse over a cell. Inserting images into spreadsheet cell comments requires a moderate amount of knowledge of Excel.

Step 1

Open up or create your Excel spreadsheet.

Step 2

Right-click the cell you want the image to embed the image into and select "Show/Hide Comments."

Step 3

Clear all text in the comment box that appears.

Step 4

Click on the border of the comment to select it. Then right-clock and select "Format Comment" on the menu that pops up.

Step 5

Select the "Colors and Lines" tab in the "Format Comment" window and click the drop-down arrow next to "Color."

Step 6

Select "Fill Effects" in the drop-down menu.

Step 7

Select the "Picture" tab, and click "Select Picture." Locate the picture you wish to use on your hard drive and select.

Step 8

Add a check mark to the selection box next to "Lock Picture Aspect Ratio" to ensure the image maintains its aspect ratio and then click "Insert."

Step 9

Click OK twice to confirm and insert the image into spreadsheet.
