How to Enable MMS For iPhone

By Daniel Alden

Apple's iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market. While the phone isn't without its problems, the design packaged with the popular App Store has made it one of the most impressive smartphones. However, a point of concern for some users was that MMS messaging was left out of the phone. Apple listened and in September 2009, they released an update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS that allowed MMS messaging.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone 3G or 3GS
  • iTunes 8.2 or later
  • iPhone USB cable

Step 1

Open iTunes and connect your iPhone to the computer using your iPhone USB cable. Wait for your phone to appear in "Devices" along the left side of the iTunes application screen.

Step 2

Click on your iPhone's name when it loads on the screen (iTunes prompts all users to name the iPhone the first time it is connected to a computer). You will then be taken to the iPhone menu in iTunes.

Step 3

Click on "Check for Updates" under "Version" in the menu. iTunes will ask if you want to download an update. Confirm your selection and click "Download and Update." iTunes will update the firmware and install new carrier settings that allow the iPhone to receive MMS messages.

Step 4

Click "OK" when the update is complete. Eject the iPhone by clicking the eject button immediately next to the iPhone's name in iTunes. The iPhone is ready to receive MMS messages.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and later models can receive MMS messages.
  • The phone may need to be restarted before MMS messages work.
