How to Enhance the WiFi Signal for My iPhone

By Whitney Coy

iPhone users have the option of connecting to the Internet through the 3G network or through an available Wi-Fi signal. Wi-Fi usually makes an iPhone load faster than 3G, although a weak Wi-Fi signal can make the device run slow. Sometimes a weak signal is due to the iPhone and not the signal. Options are available to help enhance your iPhone's Wi-Fi signal.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone case or bumper
  • USB cable

Step 1

Use a case or bumper if you have an early model iPhone 4. These models came with defective antennas, which are the metal bands that run around the outside of the device. Your hand touching the band causes interferrance, so a case solves the problem and strengthens the signal.

Step 2

Turn your iPhone onto airplane mode. Do this by tapping "Settings" than the "On/Off" button to the right of "Airplane Mode." Once you see the orange airplane picture appear in the upper-left corner of your screen, tap the "On/Off" button again to return to normal mode.

Step 3

Reboot your iPhone by holding the "On/Off" button at the top of your iPhone and the "Home" button at the bottom of your iPhone at the same time until the screen goes black. A white Apple logo will appear on your screen when the reboot begins.

Step 4

Charge your iPhone. A full charge sometimes helps strengthen Wi-Fi signal.

Step 5

Connect the USB cable to your iPhone. This sometimes strengthens signal even without connecting the other end of the cable to a computer or power outlet.

Step 6

Take out the SIM card and put it back in. Your SIM card tray may be on the top or side of your iPhone, depending on what model you have, Use a straightened paper clip to push the eject button, open the drawer, take the card out and put it right back in. Close the drawer then turn your iPhone off and back on again to see if the signal gets better. Sometimes the card just isn't making a good cennection and this can help.

Step 7

Reset your iPhone to try to strengthen your signal. To do this, tap "Settings, " "General," "Reset" and "Reset Network Settings." This will delete any information stored on your iPhone, and anything not backed up will be lost.
