How to Enter a Degree Sign

Entering text onto a computer is usually an uncomplicated process, whether you use a word processing program, a text editor, an email program or you enter text for communicating on the Internet. You may find characters that you cannot simply enter with a specific key, however. The degree sign is one of these special characters that requires a specific sequence of keystrokes to create the symbol. If you use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, you can use the special symbol menu to enter a degree symbol.

General Applications

Step 1

Position your cursor where you wish to enter the degree sign.

Step 2

Press the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard to enable the numeric keyboard. You may see a light indicating that you enabled the numeric keyboard.

Step 3

Hold down the "Alt" key with one finger.

Step 4

Enter "0176" while holding down the "Alt" key. You should see a degree sign appear.

Microsoft Word

Step 1

Position your cursor where you wish to use a degree sign.

Step 2

Click "Insert" and then click the small arrow to the right of the "Symbol" menu.

Step 3

Scroll down through the available symbols until you see the degree sign.

Step 4

Click the degree sign to insert it into your text.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must use the numeric keyboard to enter the numbers --- using the keyboard numbers will not produce a degree sign.
