Laptop computers from the Dell computer company run the Microsoft Windows operating system, which has a custom startup mode called "Safe Mode." Safe Mode starts the Windows (XP, Vista and Windows 7) operating system without any extra drivers or software. This makes the computer easier to repair since you don't have to worry about driver and software interactions when in Safe Mode and you can instead concentrate on repairing whatever computer problems you are facing.
Restart your Dell laptop if it's already on or turn it on if it's off.
Wait for the Dell logo splash screen to disappear and then immediately start pressing the "F8" key every one to two seconds, until you see the Advanced Boot Options screen appear.
Highlight "Safe Mode" with your arrow keys and then press the "Enter" key to start the laptop in Safe Mode. If you need networking or command prompt support while in Safe Mode, you can choose to boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" or "Safe Mode with Command Prompt," respectively.
