How to Erase the Contents of a DVD-R

By Jessica Frame

DVD-R discs can store games, movies, photos and other large files, freeing up hard drive space on your computer. DVD-R discs generally are used only once, but if the burning software you used didn't format the disc correctly, you can remove files just as easily as you put them on the DVD-R.

With a PC

Step 1

Open the disc drive or CD/DVD burner on your computer, place the disc in the tray and close the drive.

Step 2

Click "Start" > "Computer."

Step 3

Right-click on the drive icon and select "Erase Disc."

Step 4

Select "Continue" to allow Windows to open the program. Choose "CD/DVD Writer" and select "Start" to begin erasing the disk.

With a Mac

Step 1

Open the disc drive or CD/DVD burner on your computer, place the disc in the tray and close the drive.

Step 2

Choose "Applications/Utilities" > "Disk Utility" in the hard drive menu.

Step 3

Select the disc you wish to erase in the left-hand column and select "Erase."
