How to Fill Out a PDF Application

By Josh Baum

In the early days of the PDF document format, you needed to print a hard copy of a PDF application and fill it out by hand. But today, you can complete any PDF document in an all-digital format. If your PDF application was created specifically to be filled out on a computer, you may be able to do this all in Adobe Reader. If not, there are free online tools you can use to complete it.

Step 1

Update your version of Adobe Reader if there is a more recent version available. To see the most recent version, navigate to the Adobe Reader Web site using the link in the Resources section. To see which version you have, just click the "Start" button, navigate to the "Programs" folder and find the Adobe Reader icon; the version number will also be displayed there. If you are eligible for an update, you can download the installation file for free from the Adobe Reader website. Open the download file and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation process.

Step 2

Double-click your PDF application file to open it. It will automatically open in the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Step 3

Move your mouse cursor over the application and left-click once on any of the empty input fields. Look closely to see if a blinking cursor appears. If it does, that means you can just left-click on each field and enter all of the application information. When you're done, click the "File" menu and select "Save," or "Save as" to save your completed application. If a blinking cursor does not appear, proceed to the next step.

Step 4

Navigate to the PDFescape Web site in your Web browser. Click the "Start Now" link.

Step 5

Click the "Unregistered User" link if you want to start filling out the application as quickly as possible. If you think you might use this free PDF editor again later, you may want to consider clicking the "Register" link and filling out the free registration form. If you register, you will be able to save your completed PDF applications and access them again later.

Step 6

Click the "Open a file on your computer" link. This will open a navigation window. Navigate to your PDF application file, highlight it and click the "Open" button.

Step 7

Click the "Text" button to turn your mouse cursor into a text cursor, then left click an empty field in the application and enter the appropriate data. Just left click each blank one at a time and continue entering information until you're finished.

Step 8

Click either the "Save" button or the "Print" button, depending on what you want to do with your finished application. If you save it, you just need to name the finished file and select where you want to save it in the file directory window. If you print it, you just need to review and approve your print settings, then click the "Print" button on the print settings window. Your printer must be connected and turned on if you do this.
