How to Find a Product Code for Microsoft Word 2007

By Amy Dombrower

Every Microsoft Office 2007 program, whether you have purchased an individual application, such as Microsoft Word, or an Office suite, requires a 2007 Product Key. The Product Key is a 25-character code that verifies the software you've purchased or downloaded is authentic. While it's not required to enter the Product Key when you first run the program, you must enter it after running the program 25 times. Where you find the Product Key depends on if you have a trial version or full version of Microsoft Word 2007.

Things You'll Need

  • Full or trial version of Microsoft Word 2007
  • CD packaging
  • Confirmation email

Full version

Step 1

Open the CD case or packaging that came with Word 2007 when you bought it as physical media, either from an in-store or online retailer. Find a sticker with the 25-character Product Key for Word 2007 or the whole Office suite.

Step 2

Look for a Certificate of Authenticity in the computer packaging. It includes a small seal or sticker. The certificate will have the 25-character code you need.

Step 3

Look for a sticker on your computer if you bought it with Office pre-installed. It may be on the back or bottom side and will have your Product Key listed there.

Step 4

Open your email account that you provided when you bought Microsoft Word 2007 from Microsoft Office Online. When you made the purchase, you were sent a confirmation email with the purchase details and the Product Key you need. Search your email archives until you find the message.

Step 5

Contact Microsoft if you have lost your Product Key. To do so, run the Product Activation Wizard in Word 2007. Open Word and click the "Microsoft Office Button." Click "Word Options." Select "Resources." Under "Activate Microsoft Office," click "Activate." Begin the wizard to find the Microsoft Support telephone number you need to call. Make sure you have the Word 2007 or Office 2007 CD and your computer serial number available.

Trial version

Step 1

Double-click the "Microsoft Office 60 Day Trial -- Online" shortcut on your desktop. You may see this if you have a pre-installed trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. This will link to a Microsoft Office Online webpage so you can get the Product Key. It may also prompt you to download the trial if it's not pre-installed.

Step 2

Look in the Office 2007 CD packaging if the physical media for a trial version came with your computer. The Product Key will be located on a sticker on the CD case or in other packaging.

Step 3

Look on a Microsoft Product Identifier Card if it was included with your Office 2007 trial packaging.

Step 4

Open your email account and look for a confirmation message you received when you downloaded a free trial from Microsoft Office Onliine. This will contain the Product Key for your trial version.
