How to Find an FTP Site for an Internet Address

By Dave Wilson

Web sites on the Internet typically have a specific domain name assigned to their IP address so users that connect to the web site can use an easy to remember name rather than the IP address of the web server. Web sites that make files available via FTP download do not always have a friendly domain name assigned to the associated FTP site. Follow a specific set of procedures to find the FTP site for a given web site address.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Windows 7 computer
  • Web browser that supports FTP download
  • Domain name of the web site for which you need to find the FTP site address

Step 1

Select the "Globe" start button, and then click the "Search" box and type "cmd" in the "Search" box and press the "Enter" key. The command line window will appear.

Step 2

Type "ping domain_name" at the command prompt, replacing "domain_name" with the actual domain name of the web site for which you require the FTP address. Press the "Enter" key. Note the IP address listed in the first line of the command line output.

Step 3

Open a web browser that supports FTP download, and then type "ftp://x.x.x.x" into the address bar at the top of the web browser, except replace the "x.x.x.x" with the IP address noted from the "ping" command line output. Press the "Enter" key. If the web browser is unable to connect to the FTP site, proceed to the next step.Type "ftp://ftp.domain_name" into the address bar at the top of the web browser, except replace the "domain_name" with the actual domain name of the web site. Press the "Enter" key.

Step 4

Type "ftp://ftp.domain_name" into the address bar at the top of the web browser, except replace the "domain_name" with the actual domain name of the web site. Press the "Enter" key. If the web browser is unable to connect to the FTP site, proceed to the next step.

Step 5

Type "ftp://www.domain_name" into the address bar at the top of the web browser, except replace the "domain_name" with the actual domain name of the web site. Press the "Enter" key in order to connect to the FTP server associated with the web site.
