How to Find Out If Your Email Has Been Opened

By Jose Leiva

If you have a feeling that someone other than yourself has been getting into your email and reading the correspondence, then you need to be able to find out. Luckily, it is easy to find out when an email message in your inbox has already been opened or not, especially if you use one of the free email providers such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Hotmail.

Things You'll Need

  • Email account

Step 1

Log-in on your email account and go to your inbox. Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail (see References) all open up straight to your inbox when you log-in on your account.

Step 2

Look at the list of emails that are in your inbox. Almost all of the free email providers are set up so that any new, unread emails will show up on your inbox list in boldface while read emails will show up without being bolded.

Step 3

Figure out whether you were the one that opened up the emails that are not bold by clicking on the email and reading through it to see if you remember seeing that message before. If there is an email that was marked as “read” by your email provider but you have never read that message, then you know that someone other than yourself opened that message either from your computer or from any other computer and your account is not secure.

Step 4

Change your password and security questions with your email provider. Make sure not to share your password with anyone to avoid this issue in the future.
