How to Find out My Windows 7 Product Key
All computers with the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system need a valid software product key to function correctly. Microsoft assigns a unique product key in the form of a 20-digit string of letters and numbers to each copy of its operating system software. This helps to prevent software piracy and the use of hacked and unauthorized versions of Windows software. The product key is printed on a label attached to the side or bottom of the computer. If the label has come off or the printed text has worn away, you can find the product key for your copy of Microsoft Windows 7 in the computer's Properties information window.
Click "Start" on the computer's desktop taskbar.
Right-click "Computer" from the "Start" menu.
Select "Properties" from the context menu.
Find the "Windows Activation" heading in the "Properties" information window.
Locate the 20-digit alphanumeric product key beside the "Product ID" label.
Write down the product key for future reference. You can't copy and paste the information from the "Properties" information window.
Tips & Warnings
- Don't click the "Update Product Key" link in the "Windows Activation" section unless you need to activate a new copy of Microsoft Windows 7.
