How to Fix a DVD That Skips or Freezes

By Kefa Olang

A dirty DVD disc may cause annoying loading problems, freezes or skips when you're watching your favorite movies or shows. These problems are mostly caused by dirt, oil and smudges from fingerprints. If your DVD disc continues to perform poorly, cleaning it may improve the situation. This is a maintenance task that should be conducted carefully and correctly to improve longevity.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl)
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Window cleaner

Step 1

Create a one-to-one mixture of rubbing alcohol and water.

Step 2

Dab your microfiber cloth in the mixture, then hold the disc with your thumb inside the center hole and finger on the outer edge. This avoids adding smudges and dirt to the disc's shiny surface.

Step 3

Wipe the shiny surface from the center of the disc to the outside edge in a straight line. If the disc looks clean, leave it sit for a few moments in a vertical position. The solution will evaporate quickly without leaving any residue.

Step 4

Spray window cleaner on a microfiber cloth if your disc has tougher stains, such as soda. Wipe the shiny surface gently, then leave it in a vertical position to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use paper towels or other paper products to clean your DVD discs because they generally have particles that may scratch your disc.
  • Do not use harsh solvents, such as acetone, to clean your DVD discs as they may permanently damage the surface.
