How to Fix a Laptop When it Freezes Up

Computers, no matter the make or the model, have a tendency to freeze up. This typically occurs when you overload the RAM on the computer and the laptop can not process any more information. When your laptop freezes, you are not left with many options, so you'll you need to restart the system.

Things You'll Need

  • Laptop computer running Windows

Step 1

Press and hold "CTRL," "ALT" and "Delete" at the same time. Wait and see if a prompt window loads. If one does you can select the program causing the crash and close it. This allows you to return to using the laptop.

Step 2

Push and hold the power button until the system turns off. Typically, you need to hold the power button down for a few moments before the laptop shuts down.

Step 3

Remove the power cord from the laptop if the power button does not turn the computer off. Occasionally this can occur, in which case you need to find an alternative way of cutting the power.

Step 4

Flip the laptop over if the power button is not turning the computer off. Find the battery compartment on the bottom of the laptop and remove it from the computer. Momentarily the computer shuts down. Leave the battery out for a few moments.

Step 5

Insert the battery back into the computer and press the power button. Shortly, the computer restarts and begins to load the operating system.
