How to Fix a Scratched CD With Peanut Butter

By Launie Sorrels

Peanut butter is not the first thing people consider when deciding how to clean their CDs, but the stickiness fills in the scratches and the oils help to polish the CD.Use only creamy peanut butter or you may end up with more scratches than before you started.

Things You'll Need

  • Baby shampoo
  • Soft cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton cloth
  • 1 teaspoon creamy peanut butter

Step 1

Clean the CD. Pour a dab of baby shampoo onto a soft cloth. Dip the shampooed area of the cloth into lukewarm water. Gently rub the CD's surface with the cloth. Do not touch the surface of the CD with your fingers. If you do get any fingerprints on the CD, use isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth to remove them. Pat the CD completely dry before continuing.

Step 2

Polish the CD with a cotton cloth. The sleeve of a T-shirt will do fine. Put 1 teaspoon of creamy peanut butter on the cloth. Buff the CD with the peanut butter. Do not go in a circular motion or with the grains of the CD. Place the cloth in the center of the CD, and using a straight-forward motion, rub to the outer part of the CD. See Figure 1. Continue to do this all around the CD.

Step 3

Use a cotton cloth and lukewarm water to rinse off the CD, using the same motion as in Step 2. Dry the CD with a soft cotton cloth or air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • In some cases, this technique may not work. If it does not work, repeat the process, this time covering the disk with peanut butter. Let the peanut butter sit for 10 minutes and then wipe off as you did in Step 2.
