How to Fix an SD Card Not Formatted Error

By Stephen Lilley

An SD card is a small, compact flash card used to store files. If you're attempting to use an SD card and are getting a "Card Not Formatted" error, this means that no file system is installed on the card. Without a file system, the card won't be able to be used to store files which essentially makes it worthless. You can format the card and install a file system on it by putting it into your computer and formatting it with Windows Explorer.

Step 1

Put your SD card into your computer's SD card reader.

Step 2

Click "Start."

Step 3

Click "Computer."

Step 4

Right-click your SD card's icon.

Step 5

Click "Format." Click "OK" in the "Format" box to format your SD card and install a file system on it.
