How to Fix Browser Hijacking

By Gabriel Dockery

Browser hijacking is the process where malicious software alters your computer's host files to force redirects in your Internet browser that you do not have control over. Browser hijacking is not only annoying but dangerous, as the web pages you are redirected to may further be used to download more malicious software to your PC. Removing the root causes of browser hijacking is an easy job with the help of antispyware programs.

Things You'll Need

  • Spybot Search & Destroy

Fixing Browser Hijacking

Step 1

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy.

Step 2

Launch Spybot Search & Destroy from its "Start Menu" location.

Step 3

Click the "Check for problems" button in the upper-left portion of the program window.

Step 4

Wait for the Spybot Search & Destroy scan to complete.

Step 5

Click the "Fix selected problems" button, again, in the upper-left portion of the software window. Some problems may require a restart; if prompted, restart your PC. This should remove any browser hijacking scripts and software.
