How to Fix MP4 Files

When a video file that has been encoded in the MP4 format does not have any video or audio, the file is corrupt. To fix this you will need to try and repair the file. This will require using software programs to correct problems with the video file. However, you will first need to determine which software program to use, such as Digital Video Repair, MP4 Recovery and Digital Media Recovery.

Digital Video Repair

Step

Go to the web page for the Digital Video Repair program by clicking the link in the References section. Click the “Download” link that is in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Step

Save the setup file to your desktop and then install the program. Double-click the Digital Video Recorder icon to open the program.

Step

Click the “Input” button and then navigate to the location of the MP4 file on your system. Click the “Open” button to add the path for the file to the program.

Step

Click the “Output” button and select a location for the repaired video file.

Step

Click the “Check Errors” button to begin the repair process.

MP4 Recovery

Step

Go to the web page for the MP4 Recovery program by clicking the link in the References section. Click the “Free Download for Windows” link near the top of the page. Save the setup file to your desktop and then install the program.

Step

Double-click the MP4 Recovery icon to open the program. Click the “Start Scan” button and select the drive to scan for media files. Click the “Start Scan” button again to begin the process.

Step

Scroll through the list or files that are displayed and find the MP4 file to repair. Click the “Recover” button and put a check for the file type in the “File List” tab.

Step

Click the “Start Scan” button and then click the “Continue” button.

Step

Select a location for the recovered file and click the “Open” button to save the file.

Digital Media Recovery

Step

Go to the web page for Digital Media Recovery by clicking the link in the References section. Click the “Download Digital Media Recovery Software” to download the demo version. Save the file to your desktop and then run the setup to install the program.

Step

Double-click the Digital Media Recovery icon to open the program. Select the drive that contains the MP4 file and click the “Next” button.

Step

Put a check in the box for “MP4” and click the “Next” button to continue. Put a check in the box for the MP4 file that you want to recover. Click the “Save” button.

Step

Click the “OK” button, when the Saving Options dialog box appears on the screen, to save the file.
