How to Fix My PC Online for Free

By Heather Kimbrell

It can be very frustrating and expensive to have your PC fixed when it is not working. If you try to save money and fix it yourself, you run the risk of causing more damage or leaving your computer completely unusable. There is a third option for fixing PCs online, which may save you a call to your computer technician or help desk. Microsoft's Fix-it Center is a troubleshooting website for Windows-based PCs that offers several automated repair utilities to address over 300 common computer problems. Microsoft Fix-it Center is safe, suitable for novice users and completely free.

Step 1

Visit the Microsoft Fix-it Center website. In the left-hand menu of the homepage, you'll see a list of categories. Choose the category relevant to your PC problem. For example, if you're having an issue with broken or corrupt file associations, you would select the "Windows" category since this is an operating system problem.

Step 2

Browse the list of online repair tools to find one pertaining to your computer issue. Click the Microsoft Fix-it button next to the tool's name to select it.

Step 3

On the tool's information page, click the "Run Now" button to begin. A download prompt will appear and will ask if you'd like to run the program or save it. Click "Run."

Step 4

Click on "Detect problems and apply the fixes for me" and allow the scan to run. If any problems are found, the Fix-it tool will apply the necessary fixes automatically. If no problems are found or if an error occurred while attempting to fix a problem, click "View report details" in the results window for more information. If Fix-it is unable to correct your problem, you can generate a report that may be helpful to a computer technician if you decide to take it in for repair.
