How to format a computer

You can reformat your computer's hard drive in a few steps. If your hard drive is infected with malware, you should instead use anti-virus software to remove the viruses. Many computer manufacturers provide installation discs to reinstall the operating system. Only as a last resort should you reformat the hard drive. And ensure that you have the original operating system disc so you can reinstall the operating system after reformatting the hard drive.

Step

Turn your computer on and press the "Delete" button.

Step

Enter the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key upon the computer startup. Depending on your computer manufacturer, the appropriate key is either "F1," "F2," "Del," "Esc" or "F10."

Step

Select your disc drive as primary and hard drive as secondary for the boot sequence. Then restart your computer.

Step

Insert your operating system disc. The CD will now delete the data from your hard drive. You can subsequently format the unpartitioned space and install an operating system.
