The SafeLink wireless service is a government-sponsored free cell phone program. It will eventually be available in all states as a service to those who qualify. This service previously existed to provide land line phones to eligible individuals. With popularity of cell phones, the service is being updated to partner with various carriers and provide cellular service.

Check to see if SafeLink is available in your area. At the time of publication, the service is available in 33 states. Check SafeLinkWireless.com or call 1-800-SAFELINK to see if SafeLink is or will be available soon in your state.
Check to see if you qualify. If you participate in another state program such as Food Stamps, Medicaid or Federal Housing then you qualify. Otherwise, check the income level requirements for your state on the SafeLink website.
Apply to the SafeLink program. The application method varies by state and the method used to qualify. In most states qualifying by program participation lets you apply online, while income qualification requires a mailed form including proof of income.

- After approval, you are given a one year contract. You will have to re-qualify every 12 months to keep your free cell phone and minutes.
