How to Get a Live Feed on Facebook

By Katarina Fitzpatrick

In 2009, the social networking site Facebook reinvented itself to the dismay of many users. Having every comment, post and thread broadcast in a live news feed did not sit well with some users. Some felt the changes were an invasion of privacy.Nonetheless, Facebook now offers users the option of viewing a live news feed of their friends' every move as well as the capability to turn this gadget on or off. By opting to display this gadget on your wall, you will no longer need to refresh your page to see what's new in your friends' lives.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Internet access
  • Facebook account

Step 1

Log in to your Facebook account by entering your username and password.

Step 2

Select “Home” on the top left-hand corner of the screen. The old news feed should appear. (The old news feed shows much less information than the live news feed. It includes status updates and anything a person purposely wants to share with others, such as new photo album or a Farmville post.)

Step 3

Select "Live News Feed." This link should be located directly above the status update box on the top of the screen. Now you should be in the live news feed mode, where you can view everything your friends post. If you sit back and watch the screen, dozens of new posts likely will appear before your very eyes. Posts visible to you in the live feed will include everything from your second cousin's relationship status changing to "single" to your childhood friend becoming a fan of Britney Spears. The good news is you can change back to the regular old news feed, as most of the information appearing in the live news feed is probably irrelevant to you.

Step 4

Click “View News Feed" to return to the regular old news feed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you wish to keep your personal activity to a minimum on your friend's live news feed, you must control this setting on your own wall's "mini feed." Your mini-feed is visible on your profile.
  • Unfortunately, Facebook's new settings do not allow users to turn off their mini-feed entirely. To keep others from seeing mini-feed posts on your profile, you must delete them one by one.
